Dredd screened at Comic Con, and so far, has received favorable reviews from the geeks types and slightly more mixed reviews from the critic types. Normally, I’d see how TK weighs in before I made a viewing decision, but the first clip from Dredd tells me all I need to know. Story be damned, I’m there for the violence. The glorious slow-motion, gorgeously photographed ultraviolence. Oh, and of course, Karl Urban (and Olivia Thirlby looks cute as a blonde, too).
It comes from director Pete Travis, who in no way previewed this sort of talent for color and pretty in Vantage Point, so I’m going to give credit for this sequence to cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle, who worked on Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours, and some other Danny Boyle films (like Millions). Never underestimate the cinematographer: They go so unappreciated.
This clip is absolutely gorgeous. Look at the stars in the blood splatter!
