SUCK IT, DIVERGENT SERIES. SUCK. IT.
And oh, has it arisen.
Remember how the Divergent series was one of the last movies to announce they were getting in on that moneygrubbing (and hopefully now-dead) split-one-movie-into-two trend? And then the first movie in the two-part finale came out, and you could hear crickets, and Lionsgate, which was hurting for a post-Twilight/Hunger Games YA franchise when they jumped on Veronica Roth’s dipshit dystopian trilogy in the first place, straight-up admitted “shit, we were so worried about getting this franchise out the door that we forgot to make the movies good, our bad.” All this while there’s one more movie to go?
Yeah. Per Variety:
Lionsgate is planning to wrap up the “Divergent Series” with a television movie and a spinoff series, Variety has learned.
Negotiations are in the early stages, but instead of having “The Divergent Series: Ascendant” open in theaters next year, the studio wants to wrap up the film series on the small screen, according to an individual with knowledge of the situation. That would then segue into a standalone television series set in the same post-apocalyptic world.
Miscellaneous info: Assuming this rumor is true, it’s TBD whether any of the actors from the previous movies, including star Shailene Woodley (#FREESHAILENE), will appear in the new, TV-bound Ascendant. Lee Toland Krieger (Celeste & Jesse Forever, The Age of Adaline) will still direct. But none of that matters because GUYS. YOU GUYS. THE DIVERGENT SERIES IS GETTING DEMOTED TO TV MOVIE STATUS. OH GOD, THIS IS GLORIOUS.
