Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is a book written by J.K. Rowling about the adventures of Newt Scamander. Scamander himself wrote the fiction book Fantastic Beasts about his adventures in the secret community of witches and wizards as he attempted to document magical creatures. It was a textbook that Harry Potter had to read in Hogwarts. The events in the book took place 70 years prior to the time that Potter attended the magical school.

Now it’s being made into a film. J.K. Rowling wrote the script, and David Yates will direct. The movie is not a sequel or a prequel to Harry Potter, but rather an extension of the wizarding universe.

Here’s the assembled cast, so far.

Eddie Redmayne — Newt Scamander

Newt Scamander is the fictional author of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, born in 1897. He is a magizoologist (he studies beasts), who joined the Ministry of Magic in the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures after attending Hogwarts. Since his retirement, he lives with his wife Porpentina. He has a grandson named Rolf, who married Luna Lovegood after the events of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Katherine Waterston — Porpentina

Porpentina is an American who met Newt Scamander in New York City, where he had come as part of his international expedition to discover new magical creatures. After their marriage, they moved to Dorset. (Waterston is the daughter of Sam Waterston, by the way).

Dan Fogler — Jacob

Jacob is a non-magical person whom Newt (Redmayne) befriends while on his adventure in New York.

Alison Sudol — Queenie

Queenie is an American witch and the younger sister of Porpentia. She is extremely beautiful, being described as a “bombshell.”
