Surprises? The unfortunate inclusion of Mel Gibson and Hacksaw Ridge. GIBSON DOES NOT DESERVE A REDEMPTION ARC IN THE STORY OF LIFE.

Surprise snub? No Deadpool (I’m not saying it necessarily deserved an Oscar nom, but I’m still a little surprised it didn’t get one).

Otherwise, it’s mostly what the awards season has primed us to expect: Moonlight, Manchester by the Sea and La La Land, plus Hidden Figures, which has gained a lot of momentum in the Oscar race in recent weeks.

Biggest Disappointment: Nothing (not even in the song category) for Sing Street, and no acknowledgements for Hunt for Wilderpeople even in the screenplay category. (A site favorite, Nice Guys, was also shut out, but we had no expectations).

Most welcome nominations: All the love for Hidden Figures, Moonlight and Hell or High Water, plus Michael Shannon (I haven’t even seen Nocturnal Animals, but Shannon already deserves an Oscar nomination for a lifetime of achievement).
