As previously announced, director Gareth Edwards (Godzilla, Monster) will direct one of the Star Wars standalone films that’ll be released in between (2016) the “sequel trilogy;” Josh Trank (Chronicle will take on the other (due 2018). Though not much is known about the purported origins stories, EW says two spinoffs will focus on a young Han Solo and Boba Fett — but whether these two directors are handling those specific tales isn’t clear — with this audition news, could it be Edwards is looking for an actress to play young Leia? If so, then yes, please.
The Hollywood Reporter says both Tatiana Maslany and Rooney Mara are testing for a lead female role; they’re among “a handful of other” actresses also auditioning this week.
Edwards is also said to be interested in seeing The Theory of Everything’s Felicity Jones, but her filming schedule may not be open.
Of the three, I’d love to see Maslany win out; she’s so phenomenally brilliant in Orphan Black, and deserves this kind of breakout (I’m going with Leia) film role.
Keep cool, TM…
Things are in the early stages though, and Edwards still needs a new screenwriter, as Gary Whitta — who wrote the first draft — recently left the film.
The Untitled Star Wars Project is scheduled for release December 16th, next year.
