There are only three episodes left in this season of The Leftovers, and HBO has finally announced that they’ll be bringing the show back for a second go. In a statement today, Michael Lombardo, the president of HBO Programming said,
It has been truly exciting to see the overwhelming response to their provocative and original storytelling. We look forward to continuing the journey as the show delves deeper into the lives of those who remain. The wonderful thing here is that HBO knows how many people rail against this show every week. I think we can translate “overwhelming response” to mean “We really don’t care if people hate it.” In fact, that’s what they’re going for. HBO, to its credit, seems to feel no fear in producing divisive work. Between The Leftovers and Girls, they’re carving out a solid love/hate divide in their programming.
With a second season, it would be naive to think we’re going to get any answers to our questions. Also, my hopes for an all Carrie Coon, all the time version of the show* is probably not going to happen. Instead, we’ll probably get more people losing their sh*t, more quiet meltdowns, and more Guilty Remnant. Sigh.
*Those twins can come too.
