Back when I was a kid, Costco was the greatest place on Earth. Not just because every Friday we went there and I got to have a soda and an enormous hot dog for dinner, but because the books section always had these wonderful shiny books that every once and a while were cheap enough to get my parents to spring for them. One set I got was the art of Star Wars, one book for each movie (the first three, the ONLY three Star Wars movies). It’s all concept art and storyboards. And the art is like a distillation of the visual reality of the movies: all grungy holes and makeshift machinery. The pictures, like the effects, had an almost physical weight to them, feeling like real places and real things, as opposed to the glitzy affairs of most science fiction.

Full gallery is over at Blastr, and a few other places. You should go look at the pretty pictures. But not here, because I’m entirely too lazy to cut and paste all the pictures, I’m not your fucking Jawa slave.
