I am not a huge Star Trek fan. I always found William Shatner to be cringe-worthy and nigh unwatchable. I’ve seen most of the original series, but it’s been more than a decade since I last watched an episode. The same for all of the previous series. I watched an episode here or there, but I couldn’t tell you much about them. The movies are a whole different story, however. I’ve watched them and find them fun and watchable.
Now that I’ve seen the trailer for the TV series, I’m impressed with the presence of two female leads (First Officer, Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin Green) and Captain Philippa Georgiou of Starship Shenzhou (Michelle Yeoh)). The production values are gorgeous. It’s called Star Trek: Discovery and takes place before the original series, but there are immediately Klingons. Is this our first meeting with them? I honestly don’t know the canon of Klingons. We’ve also got Vulcans and Burnham appears to be a human raised by them (Spock’s father, to be specific).
Judge the trailer for yourself and let me know what you think.
The series also stars Jason Isaacs, Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, and Rainn Wilson (among others). Bryan Fuller is a producer, co-creator, and writer on some of the episodes. Alex Kurtzman is also a creator and sometime writer for the series.
CBS will begin airing the series sometime this year and episodes will be immediately available after airing on their CBS All Access digital platform. There will also be a companion show called Talking Trek that airs after episodes.
