We’ve already brought you a tribute to Queen BAMF Jenny Beavan, a rant about interrupting acceptance speeches with music, a fashion review, a reminder about Brie Larson’s pop past, Leo/Kate emotions and the requisite gifs, but I figured you’d want a separate post to talk about that weird Stacey Dash moment at last night’s Oscars, because…
If you didn’t watch, during a monologue on Hollywood’s diversity issue, host Chris Rock brought on conservative Fox news pundit and noted BET-hater Stacey Dash as “the director of [the Academy]’s minority outreach program.” She stood there and smiled awkwardly for a few seconds, and then it was over.
We were supposed to be laughing… at her, right? At the fact that she’d be a horrible choice to head a “minority outreach program”? Did she know that? According to Dash, her participation was a little self-deprecating humor about how, within the black community, she’s often considered not to be “black enough.” BUT YOU’RE LITERALLY PARTICIPATING IN A JOKE THAT IS SAYING JUST THAT.
Anyway. The whole thing was weird. The cameo was weird. The way no one in the audience quite knew how to react to it was weird. The way the Oscar producers thought it would be a good idea to include a joke that most people watching wouldn’t get is weird. What’s the demographic for this joke? “People who are on the Internet a lot?” Because you have to know she’s a conservative pundit, but you also have to know about the situation with her and Black Twitter. I’m not quite sure how to react to any of it. Here, have some gifs.
