I won’t even bother playing coy; around here, we’re desperate for winter to come. No, not that snowy, icy stuff of sledding and skating those with kidlets are gearing up for — instead, we’re running around yelling, “To Westeros and beyond!” HBO is our stern mistress, and we’re all just tied to our chairs, waiting for Game of Thrones to return. Case in point, we salivate over any and all season 5 glimpses we’re able to spy and speculate over; we’re addicted to sites like Winter Is Coming, and Watchers on the Wall. Both sites are reporting on new details about new character “Malko,” (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), and what his connection to Ser Jorah and Tyrion is. Again, I’ll give you a Spoiler warning: Both season 5 details and a few points from the books will be discussed below; if you want your brain spoiler-free, back on out now.
Coast clear? Onward…
While many fans were speculating Akinnuoye-Agbaje’s character would be a Meereen pit fighter, it turns out he’ll be playing a slave auctioneer who puts Tyrion and Jorah up for sale. Book readers will note Penny isn’t mentioned; it looks like that character, and some of Tyrion’s less interesting adventures have been cut, but Jorah and Tyrion still end up captured together. (Lost watchers, you’ll remember Akinnuoye-Agbaje is connected to another Penny.) According to WotW’s sources, a scene where Malko sells Jorah to Yezzan zo Qaggaz (Enzo Cilenti) was filmed near St. John’s Fortress in Sibenik, Croatia. In the scene, Tyrion puts on a bit of a crowd-pleasing show to gain Yezzan’s attention, and manages to get himself bought as well. If that’s all there is to Akinnuoye-Agbaje’s role, that’s a bit disappointing — especially since the actor recently made this cryptic statement to Vulture: “The character that I play, it’s actually advantageous to me not to actually know too much. That’s all I’m going to say.” Hopefully, Malko will show up again after the auction.
Meanwhile, a few more spoileriffic photos have made the rounds, including these shots of Tyrion sitting near Daenerys, and it looks like they’ll be watching Jorah fight. (They wouldn’t dare kill off Jorah, right? RIGHT?)
But in other (later?) photos, Dany is down in the pit, there seem to be a few bodies up in the stands, and Jorah looks panicked, but still alive. Could it be Jorah’s fight scene is combined with (I’ll white out in case non-readers don’t want further spoilers) swipe ahead to see: Dany’s wedding day pit festivities, and her subsequent fleeing on Drogon’s back ?
And, let the speculation begin…(beats the hell out of returning to work the Monday after vacation, no?)
