With the officially back-on again release date only a day away now, Sony is hustling to get The Interview out to the masses after multiple movie theaters (mostly independent theaters) agreed to screen the movie on opening day. There were rumors that it would be made available on VOD or another platform, but according to CNN’s Brian Stelter, Sony is finalizing a deal to make The Interview available to be rented on YouTube.

Reuters, meanwhile, confirms and reports that a “tentative” deal has come together.

I realize this, of course, is a huge exception brought about by extreme and unforeseen circumstances, but what if The Interview does incredibly well in YouTube rentals? Who knows if this may ultimately usher in day-and-date openings for wider releases. This could change the entire landscape!

Or, more likely, everything will go back to normal next week.

(Update: Seconds ago, the Associated Press reported that this is a done deal.)
