Sometimes We DO Get Nice Things! Mulan Gets Live-Action Remake

In just three weekends, Disney’s live-action Cinderella has already made $335 million worldwide. Between this success, Maleficent’s impressive $758 million pull last year, and Alice in Wonderland’s insane $1.02 billion total, Disney is eager to keep the live-action reboot train rolling. On one hand—I know—reboots, ugh. On the other, this time it’s Mulan!

THR reports Disney bought a script by writing duo Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek that translates the story of legendary Chinese warrior/cross-dresser Hua Mulan into a presumably big budget adventure movie. Unknown is how close this film will be to the 1998 animated Mulan. So basically, we don’t know if she’ll have a magical dragon friend. But hey, both Maleficent and Cinderella got to keep their animal sidekicks, so it’s not out of the question.

This announcement was also made under the wire of Women’s History Month, notable because this year’s celebration saw #FilmHerStory trending. The hashtag shows the demand for biopics about the women of history. And hey, wouldn’t you know, I wrote about that.

Also exciting is that Disney is taking a chance on two untested (and female) screenwriters. Martin and Hynek have been working together since high school, mostly writing plays for Know Theatre of Cincinnati, though they recently did script revisions for an unnamed Amazon studios project. Disney telling a story about a woman, written by women is a great step. Dare we hope they’ll bring in a female director too?

That’d be a first in this reboot line, as the helmers so far have been Tim Burton, visual effects artist turned director Robert Stromberg, Kenneth Branagh and Bill Condon, whose handling the upcoming live-action Beauty and the Beast.

Tell us in comments who you’d like to see helm Mulan.

Kristy Puchko will be singing every song from Mulan for the rest of the day. Week. Whatever.

This is what you give me to work with? Well, honey, I’ve seen worse!…
