Casting is underway now for Joss Whedon’s “S.H.I.E.L.D.” television series, and last week, it was announced that Clark Gregg’s Agent Phil Coulson was the first cast member added to the series, which is odd because (SPOILER FOR ALL 3 OF YOU WHO HAVEN’T SEEN AVENGERS) Agent Phil Coulson died in the movie.

No matter! It’s television magic. Now comes news that Ming-Na Wen has joined the cast, who we know as Chun-Li from Street Fighter as well as E.R., where she was not Chun-Li, but wouldn’t it have been great if she were? (She also provided the voice of Mulan). You may also remember her from Single Guy, and if you do, honestly, you need to remove that memory from your brain. There are much better things you can occupy that section of your brain with.

She’ll be playing Agent Melinda May, who is “soulful and slightly damaged by her combat experiences, [but] an ace pilot, a weapons expert, and a soldier who can (and has) gone beyond the call of duty.”

Soulful and slightly damaged? ISN’T THAT WHEDON’S SUMMER GLAU ARCHETYPE?

What’s going on here? In fact, the character has actually been re-named since the original character sketches for the show were revealed. Originally, the character was named Althea Rice, which is a much stronger name than Melinda May.

Anyway, Ming-Na Wen is not from the Whedon universe, which is very troubling. Stop thinking outside the box, man. We love that box of Whedon goodness. Don’t go putting new things in there.
