Sofia Coppola may be getting bored with making movies about rich, apathetic young women. So instead she’s turning to stories about rich, apathetic young HALF-women.
Coppola is in talks to direct a live action Little Mermaid for Universal and Working Title. The film was originally slated to be directed by Joe Wright, but he seems to have jumped ship to whitewash Peter Pan instead. The script is being rewritten by Caroline Thompson, who’s written (or co-written) a bunch of earlier Tim Burton films, including Edward Scissorhands and The Nightmare Before Christmas, so chances are, this will have a nice creepiness to it. However, previous versions of the script were done by Abi Morgan (Shame) and Kelly Marcel (50 Shades of Grey), so maybe we’re looking at more of sex-addicted BDSM mermaid community.
No word yet on casting, but I’d bet good money on a lithe blonde that can give good bored face.
