Can We Not Have ONE Non-Sexualized Female Villain, GOOD GOD DAMN?
We just got our first look at Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa in Dean Israelite’s Mighty Morphin Power Rangers reboot and IT. IS. A. LOOK.
A question about this:
NO, REALLY, WHY?!?!??!
What is this BSDM Poison Ivy nonsense?
I generally have a very liberal attitude towards remakes and go full eyeroll into the sunset when people start whining about “MY CHILDHOOD, BOO HOO HOOOOOO,” but SEXY RITA REPULSA ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?!
Her dress is one step up from a mumu. She could smuggle turkeys in her sleeves. SHE HAS CONE BOOBS.
Not that I realized it when I was an ickle baby 8-year-old rushing home from school to get my MMPR on, but part of the reason I loved Rita so much is that she wasn’t sexy—she was just allowed to be weird and evil, just like the men were, and she didn’t really care what anybody else else thought of that. And now we have Rita Repulsa with cleavage. Because having a strong female villain is great and all, but Teh Boys still have to want to fuck her*.
I AM UPSET. FLIPPING UPSET.
*Not that there is anything inherently sexist about the cleav or dressing sexy. You do you, girls. But dressing Rita like this is a conscious choice made by male creators, one of whom is the guy who directed the “LOL girls r sexy & wut r science!” Project Alamanac, so NO.
Father, son, holy Ma-Ma, amen.
