Samantha Bee Leaving 'The Daily Show' And That Show's Dead Now
It’s time to call it, right? The Daily Show has had an amazing run lasting almost
19 years 17 years (those first years were sub-par.) But when Stewart announced he was leaving, we all started looking around at who was left. And who’s left now is looking a little thin.
First Jason Jones bailed a few weeks ago, and now Samantha Bee is doing the same.
Samantha Bee is leaving Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” to host her own satirical series, which she will executive produce for TBS alongside husband Jason Jones.
The new topical comedy is still in the early stages of development, the Turner cable channel said on Thursday. While not many details of the TBS production are available, the vehicle will allow Bee to apply “her smart and satirical point of view to current and relevant issues,” the network stated.
And with her goes our last best hope for keeping The Daily Show as we know it.
Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Bee could have kept a similar feel if she’d taken the anchor’s chair. But the inevitable comparisons to her predecessor would have boxed her in.
Maybe that would have happened to anyone. But if I had to put money on anyone to shake things up enough to break out, it’s Jessica Williams.
I know, I know. She took herself out of contention. But I refuse to accept that. Because she is not fucking around.
There’s always been a spectacle of “Look at this absurdity” to The Daily Show. They’ll tell you about some horrific bit of hypocrisy or bureaucratic nightmare, but they do it with a smile. Not Jessica Williams. She’s funny, but she’s not interested in making the medicine go down any easier. She’s calling out the social inequalities that she herself faces, and she’s not interested in playing nice with assholes. Even for the joke. And I can’t watch enough of it.
People who don’t want to watch her? Fuck those guys.
