Why just the other day in Slack we were discussing the wonder and surprise we felt for Robert Pattinson’s post-Twilight career. Then today I see a trailer for a western romance that seems to be neither particularly a traditional western and certainly not a romance movie and the star is Pattinson. I AM DELIGHTED. Seriously, I am. I quite like the interesting career that Pattinson (and co-star Kristen Stewart) has been able to enjoy after making all of the money from the sparkly vamp franchise.
They’re actually good at acting, kids.
It’s the age of The Wild West, circa 1870. An affluent pioneer, Samuel Alabaster (Robert Pattinson) ventures deep into the American wilderness to reunite with and marry the love of his life, Penelope (Mia Wasikowska). For his journey he brings Butterscotch, a miniature horse intended as a wedding present for his bride, and enlists drunkard Parson Henry (David Zellner) to conduct the ceremony. As they traverse the lawless frontier their once simple journey grows treacherous, and the lines between hero, villain, and damsel are blurred.
I love the whole thing. Pattinson’s accent, his gold tooth, the pony, Wasikowska’s angry rebuke of an unwanted suitor, and Dude In A Barrel. It’s all golden.
You can see Damsel in theaters on June 22.
