Richard Madden Is Playing A Space Priest In New Amazon Pilot
Finished with The Young Pope and need more super strange religious drama in your life? Amazon just announced their new batch of pilots for this season, and they might have something for you: Game Of Thrones star Richard Madden as a SPACE PRIEST. It sounds so right putting those two words together, doesn’t it? Like “cellar door,” but for science fiction dorks.
Oasis is inspired by the novel The Book of Strange New Things, and will star Richard Madden as a chaplain (from what I understand the original character in the book is a Protestant missionary and already has a wife going in, so sorry, horny Catholic nerds, no Space Thornbirds to be found here probably) who’s sent to establish a colony on a distant planet. And yup, you guessed it, everything goes very badly and his faith is tested! Who could have seen that coming? Has there ever been a religious figure in a story ever whose faith hasn’t been tested? Even Jesus had to wander around in a desert feeling weird for a while.
But that’s not all! The series was penned by the writer of Bridge of Spies, produced by the makers of The Crown and The Night Manager, and directed by the guy who did The Last King Of Scotland. Also, it co-stars Haley Joel Osment and Indian superstar Anil Kapoor. Like, seriously, this has prestige weirdness written all over it.
Naturally, Oasis is not the only show Amazon will premiere when it releases its latest pilots on March 17. There’s also The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Gilmore Girls showrunner Amy Sherman-Palladino’s new series about a female stand-up comic in the late ’50s; The Legend of Master Legend, a dark comedy by some Transparent writers about a Las Vegas superhero whose family hates him; Budding Prospects, which, surprise! Is about marijuana; and The New V.I.P.’s, which is Amazon’s “first half-hour comedy” about a group of underlings that take over a company after accidentally murdering their boss.
Of course, not every one of these pilots will get a series pick-up — for every I Love Dick or The Tick reboot, there’s a show like The Interestings that doesn’t move forward. Luckily, you’ll be able to watch all and vote for your favorites on March 17. Let’s hope the the space priest really wows us.
