Deadline is reporting that Rian Johnson — the brilliant director behind Brick, Brothers Bloom, and Looper — is in the process of making a deal with Lucasfilm to write and direct not only Star Wars VIII, but the ninth film as well. J.J. Abrams, who is currently directing Star Wars VII, will step aside to allow one of the best directors around come in and take over.

It’s good and bad news, I suppose: You couldn’t ask for a better guy to take over the most valuable franchise in Hollywood history, but then again, that means fewer Rian Johnson movies over the next few years, and he’s been one of the few reliable directors to work outside of the franchise movie system.

Not for nothing, but Rian Johnson is also good friends and frequent collaborators with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who is bound to make an appearance in the franchise at some point.
