ABC went on a pick-up spree yesterday, and the big news is this: Not only is ABC renewing Agents of SHIELD for another season, but they’re also adding Agent Carter, the Captain America spin-off centered on Hayley Atwell’s character. Set in 1946, Peggy Carter finds herself marginalized when the men return home from fighting abroad. Working for the covert SSR (Strategic Scientific Reserve), Peggy must balance doing administrative work and going on secret missions for Howard Stark all while trying to navigate life as a single woman in America, in the wake of losing the love of her life — Steve Rogers.
I hope they do a better job out of the gate with it than they did with Agents of SHIELD. Also, it does bring us one step closer to Marvel world domination.
In addition, ABC also renewed Modern Family, The Goldbergs, Revenge, Scandal, Castle and Grey’s Anatomy and Resurrection, for some reason. Surprisingly, they have not yet pulled the trigger on the ever-reliable The Middle, although they are expected to. On the other hand, Trophy Wife and Suburgatory are still in limbo, but they are not expected to be renewed (and the cast of Trophy Wife, as well as Mixology, more or less confirmed cancellations).
ABC also picked up a lot of new shows, and looking over them, I honestly don’t feel like any of them will ever make it to a second season. Of particular note is Selfie, which comes from Emily Kapnek (Suburgatory), and stars Karen Gillan as Eliza Dooley, a self-obsesed woman with a huge social network following who endeavors to make actual real-life friends (John Cho also stars).
Not that interesting, but SPOILERS FOR HANNIBAL: Black-ish — about a successful black family in the suburbs that seeks to maintain its cultural identity — stars Anthony Anderson and, uh, Laurence Fishburne, in case you’re wondering how that flash-forward at the beginning of this season of Hannibal plays out. END SPOILERS FOR HANNIBAL.
Shonda Rhimes also has a new show, this one a legal drama with Viola Davis called How to Get Away with Murder. The Whispers is an alien drama with Lily Rabe that will be cancelled after six episodes. Galavant sounds kind of interesting. It’s a musical comedy fairytale about the dashing hero, Galavant (Joshua Sasse) who lost the love of his life, Madalena (Mallory Jansen) to the evil King Richard (Timothy Omundson) and has to take revenge and restore his happily ever after.
The rest? They don’t inspire a lot of enthusiasm.
