Soon the Conservative Political Action Conference will be upon us, where high-profile Republicans will revel and Citizens United will hand out honors to “true heroes,” like reality TV star Phil Robertson who’ll receive the “Andrew Breitbart Defender of the First Amendment Award.”
This free speech advocate told THR, “When one does not have the freedom to speak out loud and anywhere what one believes, freedom is dead.” Here, Robertson is right. One of the main tenets of our nation’s identity is upholding free speech. But what did the Duck Dynasty cast member say that earned him this distinguished honor?
“It seems like, to me, a vagina — as a man — would be more desirable than a man’s anus. That’s just me. I’m just thinking: There’s more there! She’s got more to offer. I mean, come on, dudes! You know what I’m saying? But hey, sin: It’s not logical, my man. It’s just not logical.”
“Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men.”
“Don’t be deceived. Neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers — they won’t inherit the kingdom of God. Don’t deceive yourself. It’s not right.”
Yup. Robertson is a homophobe who believes all gay people will burn in hell and that homosexuality is just a baby step away from bestiality. And even when these comments from a 2013 GQ interview threatened to get his show cancelled, he wouldn’t apologize. For this, his proud bigotry, CPAC is honoring him.
Perhaps next year CPAC will honor the Westboro Baptist Church for their stalwart protesting of the funerals of soldiers, gay people and any celebrity that might get their hateful vitriol on television. As for the politicians who will attend this event, I recommend we plaster Robertson’s choice quotes over all their campaign posters.
