Some News on 'Pirates of the Caribbean 5', Which Continues to Be a Thing That's Happening

Some casting news for Pirates of the Caribbean 5 came out today, which immediately brought up the strange realization that I seem to have completely missed the existence of Pirates of the Caribbean 4. Then I watched this trailer from 2010:

And I was immediately thankful for the part of my brain that blocked this out/refused to acknowledge it existing in the first place.

Anyway, we already knew that Geoffrey Rush was returning as Barbados, and Johnny Depp was of course attached because he just lays around in scarves and beads anyway so he may as well be getting paid shitloads of money for it, and also that Javier Bardem was for some unknown reason *cough private yacht cough* was in talks to join the cast. Well, Bardem has been confirmed, along with two new actors.

First we have Kaya Scodelario from The Maze Runner.

And Brenton Thwaites, of that The Giver adaptation we don’t speak of.
Baby not included. Maybe. I don’t know where this movie’s headed.

This actually seems like a really smart move to tap the YA market for casting, because no one over the age of 20 can have any interest in seeing this movie, right? Thwaites also gives possibly the most adorably broish plot description ever described.

It’s about a young man who wants to reconnect with his father, Davy Jones. There’s a curse that prevents him from doing that. I think it’s about how he goes around that and tries to fix it and he has to save his dad. I’m looking forward to it. It’ll be a lot of fun!

Despite the fact that that’s basically the plot of Freaky Friday but with dudes, I’m honestly and mostly unsnarkily glad someone’s looking forward to this.
