I love Elizabeth Banks. Everyone loves Elizabeth Banks. We all recognize. She’s in a ton of movies. She shows up in a lot of sitcoms. But she rarely plays the best friend, and nor is she asked to carry a movie. Invariably, she plays the girlfriend to the lead, or she’s part of a recognizable ensemble. She’s funny. She’s likable. She’s a good actress. And she’s versatile. She’s not a character actress, but she’s not quite a lead actress, either. She’s somewhere in the middle. She’s like that great movie that marketing people just don’t know how to promote. She’s also omnipresent. She’ll be in 5 movies in 2012, including two that have already been released: Man on a Ledge and The Hunger Games. The other three movies are, as most of Banks’ films are, decidedly middle of the road. She’ll be in What to Expect When You’re Execting in May, and we’ll probably all dislike it, but not hold it against Banks. In June, she’s in People Like Us, with Chris Pine, Olivia Wilde, and Michelle Pfieffer. It looks very pedestrian, like the kind of movie you’ll watch on Netflix to avoid watching that great documentary everyone has been talking about.

Still, great cast. But the sitcom premise and the piles of sentiment don’t help its cause.
