After an ad campaign that got off to a rocky start that led to an OH MY GOD WHY meme, the family-friendly Paddington won critical praise and audience adoration pulling in a respectable $288 million worldwide. So a sequel was assured. But how do you top the lunacy delivered by Nicole Kidman’s fashionista/taxidermist and Peter Capaldi’s randy racist? You bring in two of the most affable bad boys working in the UK.
Deadline declares Hugh Grant and Brendan Gleeson have signed on for Paddington 2, joining the returning cast of Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, Peter Capaldi, Madeleine Harris, Samuel Joslin, Imelda Staunton, and Ben Whishaw as the bear in blue.
The sequel scripted by returning director Paul King, and Simon Farnaby follows Paddington’s quest to buy a pop-up book for his Aunt Lucy. But then it’s stolen—and of who cares—Gleeson plays a safecracker named Knuckles McGinty!
Paddington 2 has started production with Brendan Gleeson as 'Knuckles McGinty, a safecracker, and TELL ME NOTHING ELSE I AM THERE ALREADY.— Helen O'Hara (@HelenLOHara) October 18, 2016
We’re with O’Hara. Done. Sold. But in case you want more, Knuckles is not only a safecracker, but also a “legendary strongman” and Paddington ally. Meanwhile, Grant will channel his smarmy charm into the role of Phoenix Buchanan, a local celebrity/hasbeen who we’re going to just assume stole the pop-up book for reasons.
This sounds as delightful as a marmalade sandwich picnic. Regrettably, us poor yanks will have to wait until January of 2018 for Paddington 2. The UK gets it November 10th, 2017.
