Our First Look at Karen Gillan in 'Jumanji' Is... Uh. Uhhhhhhhh. Hmm. Okay.
Last time we heard about Karen Gillan’s involvement in the new Jumanji movie, Dwayne Johnson was waxing rhapsodic about how they’d found the perfect “girl who has ‘Chutzpah’” to hold her own against the movie’s guy contingent, represented by Johnson, Kevin Hart, Nick Jonas, and Jack Black. We love Dwayne Johnson and all—who doesn’t—but it read as a little offputting and patronizing and token-y. (A girl? Zounds!)
Now, thanks to Kevin Hart’s Instagram page, we have our first look at Gillan in the movie and…. um.
Contrary to Pajiba’s “feminist hugbox” rep, I am not prepared to go Outrage Level 11 over this one photo, though I have… concerns. It’s clear that all four of these characters are adventure game archetypes, with Gillan sporting short shorts and a midriff-bearing top in the Lara Croft-esque role. Maybe director Jake Kasdan and the movie’s five (!) writers are planning to provide some commentary on those types, and as such will give us a complex, subversive character who doesn’t just run around as Strong Female Character (TM) (TM) (TM) eye candy for the whole movie. Maybe. Fingers crossed. Kasdan is one of the executive producers on Fresh Off the Boat, The Girl, and Ben and Kate, so something something gender representation in those shows from someone who actually watches TV, Dustin, help meeeeeee.
And hey. At least she’s not wearing heels.
