Seth Rogen's Green Hornet Will Be One Giant Ball of Sucky Mess

You all recall the feature film version of Green Hornet, due out in December, right? Seth Rogen actually lost all of that weight to play a superhero of sorts (note to overweight actors: That’s where your sense of humor resides!) Remember how, at one point, Stephen Chow, the awesome dude behind Kung-Fu Hustle, abandoned the project as director and sidekick? So, they brought in Christoph Waltz (cool!) and Cameron Diaz (what?) and hired Michel Gondry to direct the thing.

Michel Gondry? Him, I like, although he’s kind of been drifting since Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and never mind that: What’s he doing directing a goddamn superhero movie? And why isn’t Seth Rogen eating cheetos and smoking the wacky stuff and riffing on Nick at Nite reruns?

Sony execs must be asking themselves that same question now. Word is, from IESB, that Sony isn’t happy about Green Hornet. What they say is: “The tone is too campy, they’re not happy with the work from director Michel Gondry and Seth Rogen does not look the part.”

Hey! Guess what, Sony: You probably should’ve realized that Seth Rogen didn’t look the part when you greenlit the project. That’s what screen testing is for. And Michel Gondry? Have you ever watched a Michel Gondry film? What led you to believe that he was right for a mainstream superhero movie? Oh, right. I forgot. You’re all fucking idiots!

Truthfully, the studios lack of faith in the movie is actually encouraging. Maybe, just maybe, Rogen and his writing partner, Evan Goldberg, accomplished what they set out to do. And let’s be honest: Michel Gondry is a lot smarter than the suits at Sony. What the execs probably mean is that Green Hornet won’t make $200 million at the box office but that some of us might be inadvertently entertained by it.

But just in case: Sony is adding some 3D elements in post. So, if they can trick mainstream American into seeing the movie with a compelling marketing campaign, then maybe they can get an extra few dollars per ticket out of it.

Unrelated: IESB is also reporting that Josh Hutcherson (Cirque du Freak) is the latest on the short list to play the next Spider-Man, joining Peter Parker, as the latest to be considered for Marc Webb’s reboot. I think we’ll wait for an official Spidey casting notice to devote an entire post to this mess.
