All You Zombies

Rian Johnson, the director responsible for Brothers Bloom and Brick has been talking up his third film, Looper for over a year. Dustin first brought it to our attention last April. It’s a dystopian sci-fi time travel action film, which is just so stereotypical for an indie film director making it big to do on his third film. I mean, who didn’t see the progression from Brick to Brothers Bloom to Terminator: This Time We’re Robot Free?

In any case, Looper has been described as set “during a future in which time travel has been invented, with operatives sent back to the present to assassinate criminals.” Although that’s the official log line, Johnson stated on Twitter that it is “basically the exact opposite of what they wrote: hit men are sent their victims from crime orgs in the future.” So … I’m not sure how that makes sense … people get sent back in time so that an assassin will kill them? Why not just send them back to the dinosaurs? Perhaps by using something that looks like a weeping angel? If only Johnson could have explained further, damn that 140 character limit, if only technology could somehow overcome it!

The interesting news going around is that Joseph Gordon-Levitt is in talks to star in Looper, which might have pretty good odds of happening since he worked with Johnson on Brick. Levitt’s character reportedly will be sent back in time to kill himself. Tommy better watch out.
