New 'Game of Thrones' Clips and Photos Give a Closer Look at Action-Packed Fifth Season

It’s just about a month now before Game of Thrones kicks off its fifth season, filled with treachery, powerful women and at least a boob or two (wherefore art thou, oh penile brethren?).

Whatever the issues, we still love our wicked Game, and these new clips are an enticing look at what’s to come — especially this Invitation to the Set, featuring Benioff, Weiss and cast members, interspersed with lots of action:

A couple of quick clips featuring old friends…

Tyrion and Varys:

Jon and Mance:

Here’s a closer look at some of the new characters:

Nymeria Sand (Jessica Henwick)

Eldest Sand Snake, Obara Sand (Keisha Castle-Hughes)

Tyene Sand (Rosabell Laurenti Sellers)

Myrcella Baratheon (Nell Tiger Free)

Myrcella (with Doran’s — Oberyn’s brother — son), Trystane Martell (Toby Sebastian)

And, a few old “friends”:

Benioff and Weiss also answered a few burning questions over at EW, revealing that (to finish the book!) George R. R. Martin won’t write an episode this season, and we almost didn’t get to see Dorne.

“We were so happy to be able to include it. We didn’t know if it would fit, to be honest—because of budgeting, scheduling and story reasons. There were a lot of ways we had to cram it in. But it’s such an important place. Of all the places in Westeros you’d ever want to live, the Dornish seem to have figured out the right approach to life. It’s the one most aligned with what our approach to life would be if we weren’t making this show. It’s our Brazil—we dream of Dorne and the way they do things down there. And Indira Varma [who was introduced as Ellaria Sand last season]—once you have someone of her caliber, you want to double down on that casting strength. Also the Sand Snakes are such a fun, exciting addition to that world. [Prince Oberyn Martell] opened up a tiny window into this world last season, and now you get to go through that window and see what kind of world this is that made this person we loved so much.”

The magazine also revealed an unnamed actor was surprised to find out he doesn’t make it through the season:

“As they say on reality shows, eventually a person’s “journal ends”—like it will this season for one cast member (we’ll just call them “an actor”) who has been with the show for several years. In their trailer, Northern Ireland’s seemingly endless rain patters on the roof as this person puts a good face on their situation. They just shot their final Thrones scene. Their death will be as surprising to fans as it was to them.

‘It proves you should probably not read the books,’ the actor says. ‘I thought this season I was going to have more to do, and I was really looking forward to that. And then I got my dates from my agent and I thought, ‘That doesn’t tally.’ Because there was no way if they were sticking to the books I should be in it for that number of weeks. It seemed to me they must be writing me out. The showrunners rang me and told me, ‘Your time is up in the series.’ I’m disappointed but you have to accept that the demands of TV are different. I find myself being quite emotional about it. I’m going to miss it. Never mind being a professional, they’re very nice people.’”

See you April 12th!
