In a strange turn of events for a Netflix show, the streaming service announced a renewal of the planned anthology series. They sent out this tweet, which contains a clue concerning the content of The Haunting of SPOILER SPOILER, as we really are done with the remaining Cranes (who may or may not be caught in some sort of limbo inside Hill House SPOILER OR MAYBE NOT.)
A new Haunting is coming. Can you guess where it takes place? Listen closely… pic.twitter.com/vqzrd3z4NZ— The Haunting of Hill House (@haunting) February 21, 2019
The creepy voices clearly say, “empty with a great emptiness.” This is a line from The Turn of the Screw, a gothic horror novel written by Henry James.
You guessed it. The HAUNTING OF BLY MANOR, a new chapter in the Haunting series based on the works of Henry James, is coming in 2020. pic.twitter.com/nvhRBEfH2E— The Haunting of Hill House (@haunting) February 21, 2019
Bly Manor is the setting for James’s story; an old country mansion where two orphans, Flora and Miles, live with a governess hired by their uncle. Ghosts abound, of course, providing Flanagan and his partner Trevor Macy with plenty of fodder for another season of creepy family drama.
Although the story moves away from Hill House and its characters, some of the cast from season one are set to appear. My money is on Kate Siegel, Flanagan’s wife, and frequent collaborator. Time will only tell whether Carla Gugino or Henry Thomas will also continue their relationship with the writer/director in the new setting. There’s a real American Horror Story vibe in this news, but I’m actually excited about it.
Netflix, Flanagan, and Macy expect to have The Haunting of Bly Mansion ready to binge in 2020.
