Sometimes we get trade news that just seems to good to be true. Like Jenny Slate and Ari Graynor getting their own show, or Broad City’s writers being brought in to pen a female-fronted 21 Jump Street spinoff. Add a new Dr. Suess cartoon series rumored to be the “most expensive animated program ever produced for television” to this list.
According to Deadline, Netflix is beginning production next month on Green Eggs and Ham’s first season, which will be written and exec produced by Jared Stern, whose credits include Wreck-It Ralph and The Lego Movie. Also on board as an E.P. is Ellen DeGeneres, who described its animation style as “cutting edge” on her talk show. Bonus: the project got the blessing of Mrs. Dr. Suess, Audrey Geisel, the beloved author’s widow and protector of his legacy.
Expectations are already sky-high for this project, considering each episode is rumored to cost between $5-6 million to make. Take that in. That means a 20-minute cartoon on Netflix will cost more to produce than My Big Fat Greek Wedding, or roughly what an episode of Game of Thrones is estimated to cost.
But how will Netflix transform a 50-word children’s book into a 13-episode cartoon series that damn well better set the world on fire? I refer you to their perfect press release:

We’d love to share some happy news
based on the rhymes of Dr. Seuss.
Green Eggs and Ham will become a show
and you’re among the first to know.
In this richly animated production,
a 13-episode introduction,
standoffish inventor (Guy, by name)
and Sam-I-Am of worldwide fame,
embark on a cross-country trip
that tests the limits of their friendship.
As they learn to try new things,
they find out what adventure brings.
Of course they also get to eat
that famous green and tasty treat!
Cindy Holland, VP of Original Content for Netflix
threw her quote into the mix:
