When Guardians of the Galaxy came out, you almost definitely heard about Nathan Fillion’s secret cameo. On par with Star Wars: The Force Awaken’s unrecognizable surprise stars, Fillion’s cameo was of the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it (and maybe even miss it if you DON’T blink) variety, since even if you were paying attention, no one would blame you for not recognizing the voice behind this “Monstrous Inmate.”
Now, thanks to some set photos, we know that Fillion is returning for the sequel, but in a different role. Check out this marquee for a Simon Williams film festival:
Simon Williams is the name of the adventurer/industrialist/dreamboat actor-turned-superhero Wonder Man. Here are a few of the movies playing at this fictional festival. There’s a beautifully dopey looking rom-com:
This Conan-looking movie is extra great, because it was his role in Arkon IV that made him a star.
This Steve Jobs Tony Stark biopic also goes deeper than just a fun parody, as Williams and Stark had a longstanding rivalry.
My favorite, though, is Haxan 2, because that’s a sequel we’ve been needing for nearly a century.
There’s no context for this, no knowledge of whether this film festival is a quick Easter egg or a plot point. We don’t know if we’ll ever even see Williams as a character anywhere but in his movie posters. Let’s maybe keep our hopes down. Chances are, this is just an incredibly elaborate throwaway gag. But either way, Simon Williams’ Wonder Man is a role that most of us probably never realized Nathan Fillion was clearly born to play.
