Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore & Tilda Swinton Up For What Could Be Our New Favorite Movie

With Ex Machina, writer-director Alex Garland brought us charismatic characters, a to-die-for dance number and scintillating science-fiction with a feminist slant. So the Pajiba crew would have been on board for whatever this rising filmmaker dared to take on next. Well, file this under “sometimes we do get nice things,” because Paramount is backing his next ambitious effort, and some of our favorite stars are fighting for roles in it!

THR reports Natalie Portman is currently in early negotiations to play the lead in Annihilation, a post-apocalyptic horror thriller based on the first book in Jeff VanderMeer’s Southern Reach trilogy. Should she sign on, Portman would play a biologist “on a four-person expedition into Area X, a territory cut off from civilization. While there, she must deal with a mysterious contamination, disappearing colleagues, a deadly animal and a being known as the Crawler, all while searching for clues regarding her husband’s disappearance.”

Deadline discovered that the four-person crew is actually an all-female crew, and Variety declared that none other than Julianne Moore to Tilda Swinton are lobbying for roles as Portman’s co-star. Unclear is if they are competing for the same role. Insane is that either actress has to lobby for anything. If Juliane or Tilda call and say, “I want to do your movie,” you say YES and then count your goddamn lucky stars!

Anyhow, Annihilation’s supporting characters won’t be cast until a deal is settled with Portman. But production is expected to begin in early 2016, which means we could be seeing this already anticipated effort by fall/winter of that year. Bit of a shame, as we want it yesterday.

Kristy Puchko wants this more than all of the DC movies.
