Meet Nickelodeon's First Married Gay Couple!

There have been a few occasions over the last few years when we’ve caught a glimpse— or a whole lot of subtext— of what looks like a gay relationship in various cartoons. We had suspicions (confirmed!) about The Legend of Korra, thoughts (also confirmed!) about Steven Universe, and one quick instance of possible partners in Finding Dory.

Now, Nickelodeon is introducing its first gay married couple on this week’s episode of The Loud House. It’s an upsettingly overdue milestone, but boy, is it a cool scene.

Back in 2014, Cartoon Network showed what was supposed to be its first gay kiss, showing two background characters meeting and kissing hello on the show Clarence.

According to Spencer Rothbell, the show’s writer, “Originally the guy had flowers and they kissed on the mouth.” Rothbell posted to his Tumblr that he was perplexed by the change to the script, saying “I was surprised too bc it’s such a minor throwaway moment but I guess it’s better than nothing. Maybe one day the main character can be gay and it won’t be a big deal.”

And that’s exactly what Nickelodeon has done. Mr. and Mr. McBride’s (voiced by Wayne Brady and Michael McDonald, by the way) sexuality isn’t discussed; it’s not a Very Special Episode to teach kids that homosexuals exist in the world; and, maybe most importantly, they aren’t there to be gay. They’re parents. Like any other parents on any other cartoon. And they’re also gay.

Well done, Nickelodeon.
