We learned a few days ago that Josh Boone — the director of The Fault in Our Stars — would be turning the movie version of Stephen King’s The Stand into four films, turning it from a long-gestating TV or film project and into a franchise, or — as Boone calls it — “the Godfather of post-apocalyptic thrillers.”

And if you the Godfather of post-apocalyptic thrillers, you need an A-list star, and they’ve just landed the A-listiest of them all right now: Matthew McConaughey.

McConaughey will play the villain, Randall Flagg, a demonic figure who constructs an eponymous civilization in the United States after a plague kills most of the population.

That description doesn’t really do him justice, but you can bet your ass that McConaughey will give Stephen King’s most popular villain the performance he deserves.
