I admit, I’m excited for the new Marvel’s Daredevil TV series, which will be a Netflix original series done in partnership with Marvel. It’s a 13-episode series that will roll out in 2015, and will be the first in a series of superhero television shows based in New York, and will eventually be followed by adaptations of Luke Cage and Iron Fist.
And now, they’ve found their Matt Murdock, the blind lawyer of Hell’s Kitchen who fights as Daredevil. Charlie Cox, who you know from Stardust, Downton Abby and Boardwalk Empire, will don the dark glasses and cane by day, and the red tights and a billy club/grappling hook by night. It’s certainly not who I envisioned, but he’s a capable enough actor, so I’m not unhappy. I am a little nervous because, truth be told, Daredevil is probably my favorite comic book character. It’s a title filled with darkness and pathos and an honest, gritty realism that has led to some truly amazing runs of the title (if you’re interested, check out the work by Ed Brubaker, Ann Nocenti, Frank Miller, Brian Michael Bendis, and yes, Kevin Smith — all are terrific).
Also, being on Netflix means that they may not have the same constraints that other TV series’ have had, allowing that darkness to really come to life. We shall see.
