When Casting Directors Clearly Just Use Mad Libs To Do Their Jobs

The Lego Batman Movie has been shaping up to something pretty cool sounding. It’s being directed by Chris McKay, who’s worked on a bunch of Adult Swim shows, and if it can be even a fraction as entertaining as The Lego Movie was, it’ll make for a fun time. And every addition to the cast is only more encouraging: so far we’ve got Will Arnett returning as Batman, Zach Galifianakis as The Joker, Rosario Dawson as Batgirl, Michael Cera as Robin, Ralph Fiennes as Alfred, and just today it was announced that—

Wait. Hold on a second. Just need to double check this source.

Yup. Commissioner Gordon will be played by Mariah Carey.

Come again? Now, I think gender bending iconic roles is a super cool idea. Just because we grew up with a white bearded Commissioner is no reason that character has to stay that way.

This is not an issue of gender. This is an issue of Mariah Carey.

This is just punchline casting, right? Like Gordon is still going to look like Gordon, but have Carey’s voice? And definitely sing a bunch. Or maybe Chris McKay is just a really big 90s pop fan. Whatever it is, I can’t say it has me excited or even intrigued, but that’s only because I spent too much time repeating the sentence “Commissioner Gordon will be played by Mariah Carey” in my head, and now my brain is broken. Oh well, I’m going to continue mulling over my confusion, and Mariah Carey will continue not caring what we think.
