Unbreakable is often described as M. Night Shyamalan’s best work, so of course it’s the one movie from 17 years ago that fans actually want to see continued in a sequel — that’s why the final twist at the end of Split excited everyone so much. Well, Shyamalan has good news for you: he’s officially turning both films into a cinematic universe, and a third is coming.

Oh, word? Okay, I guess. I’ve never seen Unbreakable and the last 30 seconds of Split were so unbelievably ham-fisted that it soured me on the idea almost immediately (protip: any scene that involves elaborate exposition via diner patrons watching a news broadcast probably needs a rewrite), but if this was your plan all along, then good for you!

The third film of this apparent trilogy, he wrote, will be called Glass (Get it????), and will feature Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson from Unbreakable, as well as James McAvoy and “the prodigy” Anya Taylor Joy from Split. Jason Blum will return to direct the film for Universal Studios, and it even has a release date already; January 18, 2019.

I don’t know, man. I want to be optimistic, but upon reflection I’m not so sure how I dug Split’s notion that surviving trauma (in the young female protagonist’s case, child molestation) makes you an inherently more valuable member of society — and since that’s the more recent film and the only one I have any knowledge of to go on, it doesn’t inspire me with a whole lot of confidence. Hopefully they don’t just drop that idea in Glass and maybe even consciously refute it, perhaps via Bruce Willis punching James McAvoy in the face or something. What about you guys, what do you make of this?
