Sadly, no, this is not a Tina Belcher script about a plucky young woman who must choose between two lusty zombies who love her.
Deadline reports Lupita Nyong’o and Josh Gad have signed on to star in the Australian zombie comedy Little Monsters. Helmed by writer-director Abe Forsythe, the film follows a washed-up musician (Alexander England) who crushes on his nephew’s kindergarten teacher (Nyong’o), but finds competition for her affections in Teddy McGiggle (Gad), a world-famous kiddie TV show personality. And then zombies attack. I’m going to assume the title means that Nyong’o’s class of ankle-biters gets infected, transforming them into—well—literal ankle-biters.
For those of us Stateside, Forsythe is an unknown. But Aussies know him as a TV actor who broke out as a filmmaker with Down Under. The unconventional comedy centered on the 2005 Cronulla Riots, a series of violent race riots. Check out the trailer for a sense of this emerging comedy auteur’s challenging brand of humor.
Down Under earned mixed reviews and some film festival awards. But with Nyong’o and Gad, you can bet Forsythe’s follow-up will have a lot more eyes on it. Here’s hoping not too many Americans are angry that Little Monsters has absolutely nothing to do with the 1989 Fred Savage/Howie Mandel comedy.
