49 years ago, a husband and wife, Richard and Mildred Loving, were called before the Supreme Court to defend their marriage, because he was white and she was black. In an election season where racism and marriage equality are still hot button issues, comes Loving, the Jeff Nichols drama that details the couple’s struggle to live the lives so many take for granted.
Ahead of the film’s lauded Cannes Film Festival debut, I spoke with Nichols, who said he was drawn to this true story because the Lovings, “were totally apolitical…What the Lovings did, by no design, just by their nature, was to make no political statement. They just fell in love.”
In a time of anti-miscegenation laws, their love was in and of itself a politically defiant act. So it’s fitting that Focus Features’ marketing campaign for the critically celebrated Loving folds in representation politics with its message of love.
