Let's Carefully Deconstruct These New Images from the Upcoming Season of 'Mad Men'
That’s Mad Men’s Don Draper, so we know he’s in the next season (check!) and, curiously, he’s wearing a dark brown suit.
What does that mean? Well, the color brown symbolizes a down-to-Earth nature, material wealth, and stability. So, despite having been suspended from the firm, Draper is still rolling in the dough, and he’s probably trying pull his family back together. However, the black shoes with the brown suit suggests that he’s not living with Megan (she wouldn’t have let him leave the house with that pairing), and the down-to-earth nature of the suit color also suggests that the way he opened up to his daughter at the end of the last season is progression, and has clearly allowed him to be more grounded and honest.
He also looks relaxed and determined, and that hat suggests that he’s not on the prowl for younger women, although I wouldn’t rule out a dalliance or two with similarly aged-women.
It’s not the first time he’s worn a brown suit, however. But the older brown suits were more bold, striking; this one is more relaxed, less sleek. He’s aging, and he’s comfortable with it.
Could it be the 70s yet? Perhaps. But if so, he hasn’t really bought into the decade yet. He may adapt to his family, but he’s not yet ready to adapt to the culture.
The building also appears to be one in Manhattan, so we can also rule out a move to Los Angeles, at least in the early part of the season (a notion that had been suggested at the end of last season). In fact, that’s the historic Algonquin Hotel (home of the Algonquin Round Table), a hotel that is notable for allowing a cat to have the run of the place. Cats can symbolize a deeper understanding of our natural world, which ties in well with the brown suit. The hotel is also a place where many literary and theatrical greats have lived. Is Don sleeping with an artist? Does Megan live there now? Is he sneaking into the hotel to engage in a liaison with his estranged wife?
What do you think? What conclusions can you draw based on the ample information supplied in the photo. Can you make any assumptions based on the distance between the small trees in the background? Or the design on the building?
There’s so much here worth exploring. I feel we’ve only scratched the surface. Mad Men returns in 89 days. This season is going to be such a wonderful learning experience.
