Laverne Cox, star of Orange is the New Black and first openly transgender Emmy nominee, is to star as Dr Frank-N-Furter in the TV remake of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
I am so excited that the news is out. I am so honored to be a part of the Rocky Horror legacy…. https://t.co/5guzt7WTyd— Laverne Cox (@Lavernecox) October 22, 2015
The path of casting a remake a of beloved classic is one lined with the daggers of fan rage, bankability, and zeitgeist; and for a movie as iconic as Rocky Horror — and a role as ‘iconic-isn’t-a-strong-enough-word-for-this’ as Tim Curry’s Frank-N-Furter — the daggers pretty much are the path.
Jim Sharman’s hilarious and deliciously transgressive movie was a critical and commercial failure upon its release in 1975, but as the old saying goes: ‘you either die a flop, or you live long enough to become a cult phenomenon with the longest theatrical run in history, and the subject of someone’s remake.’
Fox has been working on this project behind the scenes for a little while, describing it as a ‘reimagining’ (a term which I think is just a reboot of the word ‘remake’) for the small screen.
To be honest, I’ve lost track of where we all are now with our attitude to the endless production line of remakes, reboots, and reimaginings. For a while we were bemused; then we got sick of them; then we shrugged and realised that they were probably here to stay, and as long as one snuck through once in a while that gave an old property some fresh life in a respectful but innovative way, we probably didn’t really mind so much. It was enough to make one’s head spin more than the first Monday morning margarita.
Whatever the case, if this is now happening, then casting Laverne Cox is the best possible way of going about it.
The only thing is, who the hell could possibly round out the rest of the cast? Curry’s role is obviously the crucial one, and one with the biggest shoes to fill; but that still leaves Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick, Richard O’Brien, Patricia Quinn, Meat Loaf, Peter Hinwood; and more!
I’ll be honest guys, I am drawing a complete and utter blank. I think I need a Thursday morning margarita.
