It’s been a big couple of months for Will Forte. I know his usual schtick is not everyone’s cup of anything, but he earned a whole boatload of goodwill with the Last Man on Earth pilot.
And then proceeded to lose it all over the rest of the season. He also has a role in Adam Sandler’s upcoming Racismpalooza, so be prepared for him to fall even farther from your good graces.
HOWEVER! Forte has just been cast in Keegan-Michael Key & Jordan Peele’s new movie Keanu, and from the sound of it, this may be enough to redeem him in our picky, fickle eyes. (I have also never put this much thought into our communal opinion on Will Forte, and it’s making me more than a little uncomfortable. Moving on.)
Until now, all we knew about Keanu was that it was not about THAT Keanu, but rather human actor Keanu’s feline namesake. Finally some more plot details have been released, and the movie sounds like what Get Hard could have been if anyone involved in that project wanted it to be good or smart or culturally relevant. THR is saying that Keanu “follows two friends (Key and Peele) who decide to act like gangster drug-dealers in order to retrieve a stolen kitten.” Forte will be playing “a low-level pot dealer obsessed with black culture although Peele’s character is the only black person he knows.” Also in the cast are Method Man (as a “murderous drug-lord”) and Gabrielle Union as Key’s wife.
Oh, and it’s being helmed by Key & Peele’s director Peter Atencio. The only part of this that’s even close to not being the best news of the week is the fact that we have to wait nearly a year (April 2016) for this movie to come out.
