'Justice League' Stole 'Suicide Sqad' Elements And 'Birds of Prey' Has A Full Title
One of the biggest complaints about Suicide Squad (2016) — aside from the romanticized version of Harley (Margot Robbie) and The Joker’s (Jared Leto) relationship — was the role of The Enchantress (Cara Delevingne) as the movie villain. Audiences felt that putting the criminal crew up against a supernatural goddess and her brother for their first time out was overkill. Then, with Justice League (2017), people were again annoyed that Steppenwolf (Ciarán Hinds) was the big bad during the cinematic introduction of DC’s team of superheroes. DC tried to go too far, too fast, and they fell short each time.
On November 24, a Twitter user shared a pre-production image from Suicide Squad that had a suspiciously Steppenwolf-looking figure at its center and his parademons around him.
Bullivant asked the question and director/writer David Ayer revealed that, yes. WB and DC originally wanted Suicide Squad to take on another God and his hell spawn sidekicks.
This is right. Enchantress was under the control of a mother box and Steppenwolfe was prepping an invasion with a boom tube. Had to lose that then the JL story arcs evolved. https://t.co/pSAag9rpZq— David Ayer (@DavidAyerMovies) November 25, 2018
The good news in this case seems to be that Warner Bros. and DC are scrapping the Ben Affleck Batman and Henry Cavill Superman lines and…honestly, what can they do? If they’re keeping Ezra Miller’s Flash and giving him a movie while retaining Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman in standalone features, how do they intend to clean up their huge mistakes in the timeline? Do they need to borrow Deadpool so he can shoot a few problems in the head?
Word is that James Gunn isn’t doing a sequel to Ayers’ Suicide Squad as much as he is rebooting the damned thing already. If that is the case, then the future of that part of the DCEU should be in good hands as long as he’s allowed to work free from interference.
As for the best part of Suicide Squad, — along with Will Smith as Deadshot — Harley Quinn is moving forward without Leto’s Joker just like the sequel/remake will likely do. Her Birds of Prey movie is moving along, with Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as as Black Canary, Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya, Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain, and Ewan McGregor as their foe Black Mask. While DC fans are excited to see the female cast get their own movie, a week ago star Robbie shared the full title on Instagram.
Not only is Harley moving on to her own gang of lady villains, but she’s breaking up with The Joker and moving on with her life. I’ll take that and the possibility of more of her in Suicide Squad movies as the only wins DC and WB will get outside of Wonder Woman 1984 in the near future.
