Despite mixed reviews, Jurassic World has managed to pull in over half a billion dollars worldwide this weekend, including over $204 million here in the US. This is the first time that a feature film has earned more that $500 million in one weekend.

As far as the US box office record, that’s still held by The Avengers and the global box office weekend record is still held by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, but Jurassic World was Universal Pictures’ widest release ever so it ended up with a larger combined amount that either of those movies. Jurassic World was the #1 movie this weekend in all 66 countries where it was released.

Going forward, this means you should probably count on more sequels and remakes, but hopefully also more concurrent global releases. Universal’s decision to open this same day in the US and overseas has definitely paid off for them in a big way.
