Netflix has proven itself to be fairly smart, haven’t they? They generally seem to know what we want and how we want to get it — by legal means. They’ve given us House of Cards and Orange Is the New Black to gobble down whole, broken into making original film and television series, and have millions of subscribers in over 40 countries; who are we to question their decisions? And yet…
On the heels of yesterday’s announcement that the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon sequel would be a Netflix first-run film comes the news they’ve made a four-film deal with…an actor. Your mind might have just run away from you, thoughts of Jessica Chastain, Brad Pitt, Sandra Bullock, Christian Bale, Amy Poehler, and Tina Fey dancing wildly. Okay, then you realize maybe your brain is a little out there; would A-listers really make that kind of deal with Netflix? Probably not. Jim Carrey? Guess again.
I know, I know, his movies have made a lot of money, but still — Adam Sandler? Really? Have you read Dustin’s Blended review? Grown-Ups 2? Do people still go to Sandler movies? Could be Netflix is betting that everyone too ashamed to be seen attending in public will be happy to invite him to their living rooms. As for Sandler, he’s no dummy:
“”When these fine people came to me with an offer to make four movies for them, I immediately said ‘yes’ for one reason and one reason only… Netflix rhymes with ‘wet chicks. Let the streaming begin!”
Happy Thursday, everyone.
