I’m hereby officially nominating Joe Swanberg for the Pajiban Personal Hero award which I’m just now making up. His general directing style seems to be to gather up a bunch of awesome people— basically just the kind of people you’d want at your super chill birthday party— and let them improvise. Sometimes this style works out perfectly (Drinking Buddies), and other times not quite as perfectly (Sorry, Happy Christmas). But sometimes, oh sometimes if we’re lucky, this style shoots so far beyond “perfect” that we end up with a fully-nude Chris Messina.
Swanberg’s latest movie, Digging for Fire, premiered at Sundance this week, and Messina reportedly plays a smaller part, in which his larger part is fully on display. Which was a surprise to Swanberg.
“Well, I’m all about male nudity, which isn’t in movies enough,” Swanberg said at the post-screening Q&A. “You know, there’s a lot of legal shit that goes into having people naked in a movie — there’s contracts involved and things like that — so obviously we didn’t do that because I didn’t know he was going to take his clothes off. So I wrote him afterward and I was like, ‘Well, I think I’m going to use it. What do you think about that?’ He said, ‘Well, send it to me. I don’t want to be just an extra in your movie who got naked.’ And I was like, ‘All right.’ So I sent him a Vimeo link, and he was like, ‘I love it! Use the cock!’”
Well, now we know what has been missing from every other movie ever made.
