Why 'Happy Endings' Fans Should Be Praying for the Cancellation of 'One Big Happy'

In a podcast interview yesterday, Casey Wilson (who played Penny on Happy Endings and is married to David Caspe, the creator of the show) spoke about that Happy Endings April Fool’s countdown clock. She said that she wasn’t happy about it at all, and called out the Happy Endings writers’ assistant for pulling the prank. “Why is he doing this?” Wilson said. “My husband told him to stop, and he didn’t. I was openly angry with him, to be honest,” she continued. “It’s really annoying to people who really wanted the show to come back.”

However, Wilson also noted that — during the time leading up to April 1st — Sony called her husband and said that there did appear to be some interest in bringing the show back. And her husband said, “Well, I won’t say anything until maybe I do have some news to give. But then, April Fool’s has come and gone, and we don’t know yet if it’s moving forward.

What does that mean? “We don’t know yet”? What is the “yet” all about? What are they waiting for?

Well, let’s examine the evidence.

— Adam Pally has quit The Mindy Project.

— Eliza Coupe’s show, Benched, was cancelled.

— Damon Wayans, Jr. left New Girl.

Marry Me with Casey Wilson will almost certainly be cancelled.

Weird Loners with Zachary Knighton (aka Dave) is also almost certain to be cancelled.

Who does that leave? Only Elisha Cuthbert, who is currently starring in the Ellen Degeneres’ produced One Big Happy. How’s it looking? After a handful of episodes, the ratings are not very good. It’s also on NBC, which hasn’t had a hit sitcom in years, and they are apparently moving away from sitcoms. Also, only six episodes of the series were ordered.

Still, it’s technically “on the bubble,” and NBC may want to keep a good relationship with Ellen Degeneres. But for our sake, and the possibility of Happy Endings returning to Netflix or USA or TBS or Amazon or anywhere really, let’s hope that One Big Happy gets the can.
