That’s the rumor. Sort of.
The visionary filmmaker who has brought us such bonkers yet beautiful films as Pan’s Labyrinth, Pacific Rim and the wildly underrated Crimson Peak is juggling several projects always. But one of these is said to be a Cold War era love story that’s less boy meets girl and more woman meets merman.
Here’s the official synopsis:
An other-worldly love story, set against the backdrop of Cold War era America circa 1963. A mysterious and magical journey from master storyteller Guillermo del Toro.
No mention of finned yet fine menfolk here. But The Playlist reports del Toro’s project is titled The Shape Of Water and stars Sally Hawkins as a mute janitor “who falls in love with an amphibious man, frees him from captivity with the help of her neighbor…and together they go on the run.” So, it’s maybe one part Children of a Lesser God with a splash of Splash, gender-swapped, stirred and with Richard Jenkins, Michael Stuhlbarg and Octavia Spencer in the mix?
And you all scoffed when I said mermaids were going to be the next big thing in movies.
Kristy Puchko wish she could be part of del Toro’s world.
