Is CBS Going to Slather Instagram Filters All Over 'I Love Lucy'?

Colorized episodes of I Love Lucy are nothing new for CBS. The network has aired colorized episodes at Christmastime in the past, but this year, they’ll be putting up two newly revamped episodes for May sweeps, along with additional footage that hasn’t been seen in 60 years.

The first episode with be “L.A. at Last!” This episode guest stars William Holden (Sunset Boulevard, The Bridge on the River Kwai, The Wild Bunch) and brings Ricky and Lucy to Los Angeles so that Ricky can star in a movie, presumably as the band leader for Cap’n Geech & The Shrimp Shack Shooters.

The other episode is “Lucy and Superman,” which makes it well-timed for superhero season. This one co-stars George Reeves, who was playing Superman on TV at the time. Although, if CBS finds they really need a ratings boost, I bet they could digitally add Henry Cavill into a scene or two.

Now, I have nothing against this idea, and I think doing this once or twice a year is a neat special treat for fans. The thing I’m hung up on here is that CBS has said the episodes will be colorized “with a vintage look,” as a representation of the era in which they were filmed. Doesn’t that sound like we’re going to get an overly saturated technicolor Instagram filter feel? Does that worry anyone else?
