ABC just really will not let us give up of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. It was announced this week that Patton Oswalt will be showing up as a guest star this season, playing Agent Eric Koenig, a S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot and former Nazi (or at least that’s his role in the comics).
This is a really solid strategical move for the show. It’s no secret that viewership has been dwindling, but Oswalt the kind of serious nerd cred that could bring audiences back around. I myself gave up on the show (which I wanted so badly to be great) after only 10 or so episodes, but you bet your ass I’ll watch Patton’s episode.
Oswalt has been a vocal proponent of the show. From Marvel.com,
“[They’re] a scrappy bunch of agents who are sort of working on the lower tier levels of the Marvel Universe and trying to stop threats before they even get to the Avengers-level threats,” explains the actor. “It’s almost like when you watch ‘The Wire,’ and the guys like Pryzbylewski are just chasing the paper trail but that’s kind of the whole case. That’s where they can bring these guys down, is they’re doing the kind of brutal grunt work. There are these people doing the day to day that keeps the world from spinning into chaos. [They say,] ‘no, we don’t have the shiny Tony Stark, Hawkeye, Black Widow stuff, but we are in it up to our necks and we’re doing it. I really like that. There’s a great sense of camaraderie.”
And lest we think it’s some sort of coincidence that our Nerd King with the Almighty Web Presence showed up on the floundering series, it’s important to note that Oswalt didn’t audition for this role. He was sought out.
I got a call from my agent saying they want you on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and I said ‘hell, yes.’ I’m lucky that I’m visible enough that they wanted to bring me in to play this character. I’d worked with Joss before on ‘Dollhouse,’ and I guess I wasn’t too annoying and they decided to put me on another one of his shows. So I was very lucky.
To tide us over until this episode airs, here are some sneak peeks at what’s in store for us.
To be fair, Vivian Kane would watch Patton Oswalt guest star in just about anything. Including her dreams, every night.
